In the Chartagon game you strategically explore a newly discovered island in the Chartagon archipelago, and block others from doing the same. You can play 2-4 players in (at least) two ways:

  1. Competition mode, with only two cards (or none). This is pure a strategic game. You play until the island is completely explored, and the player with most posts win.
  2. Discovery mode, with some semi-predictable randomness, using all cards (discovery, opportunity and storm cards). This is for playing with family and friends. By establishing research stations you collect cards, a.k.a. making scientific progress. When the winter comes, the players sum their points according to their cards. The player with most points is the winner!

This game started out as an asymmetric version of the Go game, and it is still possible to use Go rules if you want to try. However, Chartagon soon came alive and quickly transformed itself into a game of its own. The players now have to consider how different types of terrains (plains / forest / mountains) affects their progress and make sure that they use the terrain in optimal ways. Because the map is asymmetric, we generated over 10 000 random maps to start with, and we can make more whenever there is a need! Right now you can download a couple of maps for free, which you can print yourself, and we also created an expansion map pack with 50 maps that you can buy (10 maps in 5 different sizes): https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/extension-map-pack-for-chartagon:-competition

Because there are very few and simple rules, you will rapidly learn how to play. However, the maps allow for very complex games, and you can play using the same map multiple times and find new ways of winning (or loosing) every time.

When we discovered Chartagon ourselves, we learned a lot more than we first expected. It turned out that this land had a long history, and was part of a game series together with three other games. The games are independent of each other, but share the same theme. The games “Chartagon: Discoveries” and “Chartagon: Storm Post” are already done and ready for production, and “Chartagon: Traces” is under final game testing and parameter tweaking.

We also learned that Chartagon had both nature and culture of its own. If you want to listen to environmental sounds and some Chartagonian music, you can download the Chartagon Weather app at Google Play! And there is also a Chartagon board game timer, if you want. You can also play Chartagon online, right here for free: https://chartagon.com/online

That’s enough text. Now go gaming!!! We hope you like it!!!

This is from the rulebook, showing where to place the decks and cards.
You can even play on the box, so you get as many maps as possible 🙂
Some maps will be available as Print and Play
Competition mode: maps come in many shapes… This is from a prototype.
Competition mode: a map with a lot of forest requires a different strategy than a map with a lot of plains or mountains.
